Answer Jim Peters, Empire games Vancouver about mid 50's, watched him enter the stadium at the end of the marathon and about 2/3 miles ahead of the nearest competitor only to stagger from side to side and then colapse. He stood up again moved a few more paces staggering from side to side and being cheered on by the crowd and colapsed again. This went on for a number of minutes, he could not stand upright just staggered along until he finaly colapsed from fatigue.
Q#44 Remembering the golden age of steam trains, when train travel was in it's glory, remember the Coronation Scot, The Mancunian, The Essex Coast Express, and many others to numerous to mention. Well where did THE COMET run to and from in the 50's/60's.

....then there was the "Flying Scotsman" Euston - Edinburgh on the old LMS, and the "Royal Scot" again Euston but to Glasgow on the west coast line. Remember as a kid getting off at Waverley from the former.
I mind reading about a 'Comet' in USA out of New York, but I'm sure you mean a British train?
London to Brighton ? that was the 'Brighton Belle' -
I get a train set nearly every year from my wife - ten bob ones from 'Poundstretchers', cos she's fed up with me asking for a Hornby for Christmas! (No, seriously!!)
There was a train running up the centre of England north from London sort of parallel with the above 'Scots' - could that be the one in the question?
Sorry - London to Leeds?

As Brendan says on "Coach" - "It's Christmaaaaas!"
There might be one or two wandering about, only looking I believe, and not taking part in the posts......
Why bother coming on and not participating, I say,.....
As to the Q: the only logical answer seems to be London > Manchester, then.
Don't think a train from, say Brum to Leeds, would be named....? (can that be done, or would have to change at Man.?)

Sorry: If no-one comes in with the answer at, say, 11:30 or thereabouts, suggest you put up another which can run until breckie? (I know it's not a full 6-hours, but as you say, nobody seems to be aboard) That OK with you?

Correct London - Manchester London Road, but I bet you didn't know that back in the 50's you could catch a direct train from Pool to London that took just 4hrs, not bad for old British Rail 60 years ago.

Maybe not back that far, but I have caught a 7/8-ish 'Pool to London many a time in the 70s and early 80s.
Off to wet my whistle now, await your next question.....

Now that we've all(?) got our brains unscrambled, and our marbles lined up up in nice coloured rows, ready for the next game, the questions are now to be continued..... With Q#50 being held over due to not being answered (you'd enough bliddy time ! ;D ), it's on to # 51 What happened in England for the last time in 1960? A nice easy one to help you revive from the Holiday.......
