Today marks the 60th anniversary of Blackpool’s greatest ever game.
‘The Matthews Final’ saw Blackpool come from 3-1 down with 22 minutes remaining to beat Bolton 4-3, thanks to an inspirational performance by Sir Stanley Matthews and a hat-trick from Stan Mortensen.
The game is not only the club’s biggest day, but also one of Wembley’s most celebrated FA Cup finals.
The Seasiders looked to be dead and buried, only for a comeback which would go down in English football history.
Two from Stan Mortensen and a last-gasp Billy Perry winner won the cup for Blackpool, the only time in their history.
In Saturday’s Gazette will be a special pull-out to celebrate the anniversary, with interviews and never seen before pictures from the game and celebrations.
The club are holding a special dinner at Bloomfield Road on Saturday evening, and the only surviving member of the team, Cyril Robinson will be the special guest.
He said: “I have still got the medal, I wouldn’t sell it and will go down to my daughter.
“I’m looking forward to Saturday’s meal and it will be a big do with a lot of people there.
“It has always been a good memory for me, one I’ll never forget.”
Despite a hat trick from Mortensen, Robinson still points at Matthews as the star man.
He added: “It was the best game I saw him play.
“It was all Stanley Matthews, he was a pleasure to play with.”
