Blackpool began 2013 with a whimper in a 0-0 draw at home with a well organised Hull City.
This was as poor a display as witnessed by the Bloomfield Rd faithful in many a year and a far, far cry from the vibrant attacking displays which the crowd were treated to under the leadership of Ian Holloway.
The Blackpool side appeared to lack passion, drive and the will to win as far too often they were clueless going forward with only Ludovic Sylvestre looking likely to create anything.
The front three of Ince, Taylor-Flether and Thomas were abysmal. Thomas is a very poor player with a poor first touch, Ince looked disinterested and had quite possibly his worst display in a Blackpool shirt and the only other Pool he will get a move to on that showing is Hartlepool. The least said about Taylor-Fletcher the better. He put in yet another shocking show losing the ball 90% of the times he got it and doing absolutely nothing of note. It makes you wonder just how bad he has to be to be dropped.
Angel Martinez must be wondering why on earth he is not in the team, playing such a defensive player in the midfield as Basham in a home match is a very negative move.
Neil Eardley made his first start in severel months and managed to demonstrate quite clearly why he has not been selected. He made a couple of tackles but was beaten too often and played some dreadful passes.
Cathcart was the man to make way but surely that should have been Broadfoot. Cathcart is a much better option at the back and Broadfoot fails to inspire any confidence.
The first half was pretty much a non-event with Hull failing to test Gilks and Blackpool failing to test the Hull keeper.
Delfounseo and Dicko should have been playing up front from the start but when they eventually did come on they had too little time to really influence the game. Hull by comparison changed their toothless front two at half time.
Hull looked the side most likely to win the game in the second half. Eardley did his best to assist when setting Hull up perfectly but the shot flew over the bar. Hull also had further chances with a header from a cross straight at Gilks and a dangerous free kick also hit straight at the keeper.
Blackpool finally had their first proper effort of the match after 72 minutes. Taylor-Fletcher won a header with his first and only decent contribution of the match, Ludo took over, set Ince up but his curling shot was well saved by the keeper who pushed it round the post.
The only over decent effort came in stoppage time when Gilks came off his line to claim a corner for the first time this season, he bowled the ball out, Ludo found Delfounseo but his shot was again well saved by the Hull keeper.
Blackpool desperately need reinforcements in the coming month particularly in the attacking department.
Appleton has now had 11 games to make his mark on the side and the mark, in my opinion, is not a particularly good one. 13 points from 11 games is simply not good enough. There are far too many draws, not enough attacking intent and he does not inspire confidence. He just stands there with his hands in his pockets whilst the opposition managers are jumping up and down and getting involved.
Something needs to change quickly and that includes the pitch which is an utter disgrace.
