Now, most of you know a lot more about football than I, but I will defer to no one regarding my man management and team management experience, so please give what I say a bit of consideration before telling me I'm talking bxllxx!
Our success over the last 5 years has been based on little Blackpool against the world. Lower league players getting a chance at a higher level, which they grabbed with both hands. The same players, plus a few who had played at a higher level and not achieved for various reasons, melded together in a rock solid, take on the world, mess with one of us and you mess with all of us, TEAM. Bit like the crazy gang at Wimbledon, actually.
Now, Sir Ollie has a vision of a decent squad of players who are all skilled, understand the system he plays, from youth to first team, and can basically outpass all opponents. He sees being able to bring anyone in and continue to succeed, so different from our PL days when at times he struggled to get a team, never mind spares.
The problem with this is that it is such a large team, there is inevitably less bonding ( remember when he took the first team to the sandcastle, or the casino, or bowling?) Players don't know whether they will be in the team or not, and I'm sure that doesn't help their egos and hence confidence. The real surprises for me have been how far backwards Gilks and Evo have gone, both were awesome last season, maybe Evo's twins are keeping him up. However, end of last season, the real improvement to our defence was Incey and Matty tackling back like hyenas.
Which leads me on to my final thought. Our PL season was disrupted by CA's transfer shenanigans, upset the rest of the team. I wonder how much the tapping up of Matty has again upset the rest of the team, it certainly affected his own form.
So, if Sir Ollie needs any advice at all from a passionate long term, still be there if we go up, down or sideways fan, it would be to make a smaller first team squad, work blinkin hard at team building, look to develop the in team leaders to be far more vocal in game ( we need a Gnasher). After the start of the season, there can be no doubt we have all the skills, it is just about supporting the individuals to perform, and the fans need to be patient as well, I can't understand the reports of Ollie getting personal abuse off "fans"
