To the BBC re this year’s SPOTYs
You sycophantic, ingratiating, obsequious, toadying and downright smarmy bunch of wankers.
Why did I waste my time watching this? I don’t usually watch it because it’s horrifyingly patronising and embarrassingly condescending. And this year was no different.
I watched last night because Ollie was up for the Coach of the Year Award. And he obviously cares about it because he turned up in his best suit with his autograph book in hand. He should have won the award by the combined length of Celtic Manor’s par fives and he was there because the Beeb invited him. And a winners speech from Ollie would be the highlight of the evening given has latest lambasting of Blatter and Platini.
So they gave it to Colin Montgomery.
When I had finished (around an hour and a half later) I started to get annoyed, and then I got rather angry, and then it all went red and I went out and kicked all next doors hideous garden gnomes over in a fit of pique and -11OC temperatures.
Colin Fat Boy Won Nothing Crap Husband Shit Head Bad Attitude No Bottle when it Mattered Montgomery.
Fucking Marvellous.
And what for? For getting together the 12 best golfers Europe has to offer, nine of which were already picked for him and two more who were the soon to be world no1 and a two time Masters champion. And he still picked wrong because Paul Casey should have been there in front of Donald!
And motivating them for four days? Yeah right. And then beating the Yanks by one point. Whoopee do. Underwhelmed isn’t in it.
And then they got to Beckham. I’ve no particular beef with Becks. He was a good footballer who turned up when the heat was on and deserves credit for what he achieved during his career. But a LIFETIME achievement award? He’s 35 years old for fuck sake. 35! That’s only just out of puberty for the modern day footballer.
They should have given a joint award posthumously to the very sadly missed and hugely popular Voice of Rugby Bill McClaren and the equally missed Voice of Boxing Harry Carpenter, men of honour, dignity and longevity who enhanced sporting events for decades with dedication and enthusiasm. These guys brought sport into my life via crackly radio signals and black and white pictures before Mr and Mrs Beckham even thought of creating bum fluff face. That’s what a lifetime is. Not 35 years.
And then AP McCoy. Apart from the wife saying “who?” I have no argument because he is an awesomely dedicated and talented sportsman. But a personality he is not. Next doors garden gnomes (RIP) had more personality. I would also like to point out that AP has had several “Vote for McCoy” races named after him at race meetings over the last few months. Every bookmaker chain has had a “Vote for McCoy” campaign going since he won the National in April, and he has been the favourite for Sport’s Personality of the Year since the book was opened in September. None of the other candidates had anywhere near that level of support (but I bet they do next year!)
And so back to Ollie.
Over the last year he has transformed our bunch of misfits and journeymen into a Premiership Club and exceeded the expectations of every single Blackpool fan and confounded every worthless pundit (you know who you are Lawro, Merson, Hansen, Lineker, Shearer and Dixon). And he has done this on a yearly CLUB budget that is less than one week wages at Man City.
He has done this with players that no one else wanted and he has done it playing attacking stylish football that is a joy to watch. It is a coaching achievement that bears comparison with Brian Clough’s early work and it’s an achievement that flies in the face of all football experience.
Had anyone said at the start of the year that in just 12 months time Blackpool Football Club would be mid table in the EPL with 22 points, games in hand and playing great attacking football then I would have laughed out loud at the stupidity, patted them on the head and suggested that the little men in white coats were on the way..
He has done the impossible and he has done in style.
Yah boo sucks to the BBC and there myopic Southern (that’s Southern England, Ted) and Merseyside bias.
Ollie is without doubt
“The Coach of the Year”.
