For the second home game in a row Blackpool were heavy odds on favourites to collect three points and for the second game in a row they put in an abysmal performance to lose the match.
This time they did not have the handy excuse of being able to blame the conditions although the decision to water an already heavy pitch just before kick off was somewhat perverse. The pitch is already in a dreadful state cutting up and looking generally poor. A shocking state of affairs when you compare it to the pitch of a league two side up the road and consider all the money the club has earnt.
The pitch cannot excuse the performance and result though. In a major Holloway named an unchanged side from that which beat Hull which once again meant no start for Angel and no return to the midfield which played so well in the opening three matches.
Blackpool actually were not too bad in the first half, Matty Phillips had a couple of chances, the ball wouldn't come down quickly enough and his shot was blocked and an excellent shot with his left foot was well saved by the Charlton keeper. Taylor-Fletcher was the best player in tangerine during the first half and saw a cheeky attempt to catch the keeper out go narrowly over and, after superbly beating two men, blazed over when he should have hit the target and scored.
The first half was fairly even, only a last ditch tackle from Crainey denied Charlton but Blackpool's inability to defend corners and set pieces into the box is truly shocking. Charlton had two corners towards the end of the half, the first saw a free header from a Charlton man fly over and the second saw an unmarked attacker nip in and fire against the woodwork.
These two scares clearly did nothing to alert the defence and goalkeeper to the danger as Charlton took the lead three minutes into the second half. A corner came in from the left, Gilks decided to stand as still as he could on his line, the defenders stood there watching as a Charlton player headed in from a couple of yards out. Terrible defending, why Gilks is incapable of claiming balls into his six yard box is baffling.
Holloway responded by making shocking substitutions which gave Blackpool no chance. Ince came on but not for the ineffective Delfounseo instead it was Gomes who came off. He had given the ball away a few times but he at least looked like he might create something.
Taylor-Fletcher dropped back to midfield where he is nowhere near as effective as when he is part of the front three. More bizarely, Kevin Phillips and Dicko came on for Osbourne and Delfounseo. It was crying out for Ludo or Angel or both to come on and create something and everybody apart form the manager could see this.
Blackpool's tactics were then to hoof it up to the front six who won absolutely nothing in the airagainst much taller defenders. It was easy for Charlton who soon doubled their lead. It was a good finish but Pool were inviting pressure, standing off them inviting them to shoot, the first shot was blocked but the second was emphatically fired home.
Blackpool never remotely looked like getting back into it as a well organised Charlton had done their homework - not a tough assignment against Pool at the moment - stay organised, win some set pieces, kick it into the six yard box and head it in.
The only chances for the home side in the second half were a shot from Ince that was easily saved and two headers from corners by Baptiste, neither of which threatened the goal.
The form of Evatt is worrying, he looks a shadow of his former self, Eardley had a very poor game, Angel must be a better option than Ferguson and I really do not understand why Kevin Phillips has to play a part in every match. I would be surprised if he had more than three touches in over half an hour on the pitch.
The slump in form is really worrying and desperately needs to be put right. The manager needs to work out quickly what his best team is and stick with it, we need a midfield at all times to create chances and most of all we need to learn how to do basic defending.
