Think i shall have a bit of that action at 18/1
The Championship 2011-12 season looks to be a wide open contest, with the latest odds suggesting Leicester City and West Ham United will lead the way
At least half the teams in next season’s Championship will have aspirations of getting promotion to the Premier League, with two automatic promotion places available as well as four play-off slots for a quartet of clubs to battle it out for that final place in the top flight.
Leicester City were unable to make it into the top six of the Championship last season, although the current Championship 2011-12 odds have the Foxes as the favourites with several bookmakers including bet365.
Sven-Goran Eriksson is the manager of Leicester and it will be the Swede’s first full season in charge, with the Midlands club looking to recruit the players that will make them a force in this division.
West Ham United might have had a woeful 2010-11 season, although Sam Allardyce has taken charge at Upton Park and this seems like a wise appointment from the Hammers board. Having steered Bolton to the Premier League, Allardyce is aware of what’s required to gain promotion and there has been plenty of money for the London side. Coral offer a best price 7/1.
The other two teams that were relegated to the Championship in May are Birmingham City and Blackpool. The current Championship 2011-12 odds suggest that the former are likelier to challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League, despite having to recruit a new manager following the departure of Alex McLeish.
Meanwhile, Blackpool face losing several members of their squad which explains why Blue Square are prepared to offer 18/1 about the Tangerines, although Ian Holloway looks set to remain as manager and it should not be forgotten that the seaside club managed several notable victories last season in the Premier League.
Reading are available at 12/1 with most bookmakers after their play-off final defeat against Swansea last season and the latest Championship 2011-12 odds also have Middlesbrough (14/1) and Nottingham Forest (14/1) among the favourites.
One thing that both of these clubs have in common is Steve McClaren, the former England coach who also managed Boro and has now taken charge at the City Ground. It will be interesting to see what impact McClaren has after Billy Davies took Forest into the play-offs twice only to miss out on both occasions.
Southampton could be a good each-way pick considering that Nigel Adkins was able to achieve relative success with Scunthorpe in the Championship, while Cardiff City (20/1) might struggle to replicate the top six finish of the past two seasons after the departure of Jay Bothroyd.
Ipswich Town, Burnley and Leeds United are all clubs that will harbour aspirations of playing in the Premier League twelve months down the line and Brighton will have the momentum of being promoted as champions last term.
