The one good piece of news yesterday -
I know United have their detractors, but c'mon, they are a British team, playing foreign opposition....
Where's your National Pride?
- for me, anyway, was Stevenage getting thru the 2nd Division playoffs against Torquay, winning one-nil in the final, after doing the same last season.
And where were the 'Borough' two years ago?
Playing the likes of Crawley, Greys, Woking, Barnet, and Forest Green, amongst others, 'way downstairs in the Conference/Blue Square Bet Prem.
I first knew them when they were 'Stevenage Athletic' languishing in the Metropolitan League, along with such notables as Wellingborough Town, the Met. Police, Romford Reserves, Epping Town even, at their now 7,1000-capacity ground, the Lamex Stadium on Broadhall Way, and their promotion to the Southern League Division 1, in 1970-71.
Then they went thru a turbulent period in their history in the 70s, the highlight of which was when the ground owner, a local businessman, took a JCB to the pitch and facilities, over bad debts held by the club.
This resulted in them resigning from the League, and after a turbulent journey thru the United Counties and Isthian Leagues, they were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference (as it was known then) in 1994.
By now, they were know as 'Stevenage Town'
Although winners of the Conference National in 1995-96 season, they were denied promotion to the Football League (Division 2)due to insufficient ground facilities.
They were the first team to win at the new Wembley when they beat Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Trophy in 2007 in front of 53,260 spectators.
They have also had some spectacular results in the FA Cup, notably against Newcastle in 1997-98, drawing 1-1 before losing 1-2 in the replay, and in January of this year, beating the same Prem team 3-1.
So, next season - Sheffield, Charlton, Oldham, et al -
....The Boro' are coming to a ground near you.
.................Beware!
