Very thankful it does not affect us in Alanya - it's approx 1,000km/650ml. eastwards as the crow flies to Van and the Syrian border. That is not to say that this end of the country has not been struck by 'quakes - Istanbul and Izmir regions have previously suffered. As Turkey is in a highly-seisemic region, all property owners (including myself) have to purchase the 'earthquake insurance' - DASK - in addition to the normal House & Contents. Many Turkish papers (Hurriyet, Zaman, etc.) have yet to provide the story. My heart breaks for the citizens of Turkey, but the government should be ashamed of themselves. I read that Israel (and Greece) were one of the first countries to offer aid, and Turkey refused! Surely when it comes to the lives and safety of your people you should put your political differences aside and just accept the help. It should be as simple as that. www.aa.com.tr/en/manset/99440-earthquake-in-turkey www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/oct/23/turkey-earthquake-up-to-1000-feared-dead# YL.

Well Yeni, very sorry to hear once again that an earthquake has hit Turkey and hope that the death toll does not rise. I see this has happened approx 200 miles east of the 75 quake in the east of the country, getting aid into the area will be hard enough without any restrictions placed by the govenment on who provides it.

It must be terrible for the local people there, we forget that the UK is not subject to this and many other natural disasters that appear to affect so many areas of the world at the moment.
Apparently it was a vertical fault that generally result in greater damage and loss of life.
As for the supply of aid, the UAE have offered tents etc and it was turned down, lets hope common sense will prevail.

Further news on Van: Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin released the grim casualty figures at a news conference this morning. Earlier on today Mr Sahin said 117 were killed in the district of Ercis, another 100 died in Van while some 740 people were injured. Hundreds of people are still missing. Hundreds of rescue teams worked throughout the night searching for survivors among dozens of pancaked buildings, as aid groups scrambled to set up tents, field hospitals and kitchens to assist thousands left homeless. In Turkey's case, the damage is all down to: bad workmanship concrete quality inadequate connection details wrong building design Zaman has come out with - www.todayszaman.com/news-260797-opposition-leader-says-turkey-strong-enough-to-heal-wounds-on-its-own.htmlThe government doesn't want foreigners to see the situation in the SE. ERCIS, Turkey.
As night-time temperatures dropped to below zero and snow was forecast to fall overnight, authorities were in a race against time to provide some form of shelter for the thousands of people who faced another night out in the open this evening.
The last official death toll was 461 with about 1,400 injured but the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has said that “hundreds, possibly thousands” of people are still trapped under the rubble in eastern Van province.
With complaints about the pace of the relief effort mounting, the government finally agreed to accept help from abroad although Erdogan insisted that things were now coming under control after a tricky beginning. Israel’s foreign ministry said that it had been asked to help despite the recent deterioration of ties between the two countries. The Turkish daily Zaman reports that Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc insists that the recent breakdown in diplomatic relations between the countries was not at the heart of his government’s decision to (initially) decline rescue assistance from Israel. Speaking to the media at a cabinet meeting, Arinc stated “Those who say [that Turkey declined Israel's offer because of political tensions] are doing a very ugly thing.”
There have been frequent complaints among residents of the mainly Kurdish region that the Ankara government would have acted faster if disaster had struck elsewhere. “We did not discriminate between Turks, Kurds or Zaza people… We said that they are all our people,” Erdogan said.
But the revelation from the Turkish Red Crescent that 17 aid trucks had been raided highlighted the sense of despair among survivors. Ahmet Lutfi Aker, the national head of the organisation, told AFP that the trucks had been looted both in the provincial capital Van and in Ercis, the town which bore the full brunt of the quake.

The 7.2 magnitude quake in eastern Turkey on Sunday death toll has now reached 575 people and leaving about 2,608 injured and thousands of homeless. The government’s crisis management center said the earthquake leveled about 2,000 buildings and another 5,700 buildings are now unfit for habitation. It said 187 people have been freed from the rubble alive so far. Interior Minister Ýdris Naim Þahin said search and rescue efforts were continuing "in small sections" of Erciþ, the hardest-hit area. "Hopefully we will be successful in pulling out survivors there too," he told reporters.
There have been questions raised in some quarters in relation to the $50million gathered in by the government each year thru the 'Earthquake Tax' ( incl.DASK), and one reporter was apparently hushed up on national TV when he broached the subject. Is that why there is a problem with the 'Hurriyet' website and staff members been attacked?

Turkey's state-run television says rescue workers have pulled out the bodies of a blind locksmith and his two daughters from the rubble of a collapsed building, bringing the quake death toll to 603 in an area with an est. population of 1,035, 418. . The TRT Television says the bodies were recovered in the town of Ercis yesterday, more than 12 days after a magnitude-7.2 quake collapsed dozens of buildings in eastern Turkey. NTV identified them as Ýsmail Akçil and his daughters Dilber, 8, and Sümeyye, 10.
In the Ercis and Van regions, over 23,000 buildings have sustained damage to the extent that they are now un- inhabitable.
The Culture Minister, Ertuðrul Günay, has expressed concern that future earthquakes may damage centuries-old monuments such as the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque despite efforts to reinforce historical sites: “We are faced with the same scene after every earthquake. Historic buildings dating back 100, 400 and even 1,000 years stand strong, but the newer structures next to them collapse. We have seen this in Van, too. This is both saddening and thought-provoking,” said Günay. The old structures can withstand earthquakes because the country’s ancestors did not cut back on materials to lower costs and raise their profits, he said. Major historical monuments, including Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet in Istanbul, were reinforced during restorations. “They are architectural wonders. They have been standing up despite countless earthquakes,” Günay said.

Two major fault-planes run through Turkey - first is the 550km-long “East Anatolian Line” which stretches from Karliova in the north-east, just northwest of Van, to Maraþ (Kahramanmaraþ) in the south-west after which it is the 'Dead Sea Fault Line.' The other, which gives more cause for concern, is the “North Anatolian Fault” (NAF - 'Kuzey Anadolu Fay Hattý' in Turkish), one thousand kilometres long and runs from Karliova, via twenty miles south of Istanbul, to the Greek mainland. This one is on the same scale as the notorious San Andreas Fault in California. These make earthquakes an almost daily occurrence, but the vast majority go unnoticed and are only picked up by advanced tools and equipment.
The Alanya/Antalia region is relatively safe, although small shocks can be felt when bigger 'quakes happen elsewhere.
But would you know what to do in the event of an earthquake?
Basically,
* At home or in the office, get on the ground, and stay away from windows and heavy furniture. Try to take cover under a table or desk, and don't run around panicking.
* In the car: pull over as soon as you can safely can away from the flow of traffic. Switch on your hazards, and remain in the car. Stay away from bridges, traffic signals, and direction signs, etc. * In the open street: get yourself into an open space and protect yourself, especially your head.
* If there are no open areas, seek refuge in a safe building and stay there.
* On the beach: move to higher ground as quickly as possible, or move a couple of hundred metres further inland.
Latest:
The injury toll in the order of 4,152. Loss of lives still 604.
The number of homeless as calculated through the CEDIM methodology for the current building losses is around 241,000 (up from around 183,000). Currently 4,448 search and rescue, 1814 medical personnel, 20 search dogs, 668 construction equipment and vehicles including 179 ambulances, 146 generators, 79 projectors, 151 portable toilets, 53,949 tents (including 18,850 from overseas aid), 54 collective shelter tent, 109 general purpose tents, 60 prefabricated houses, 2,310 Mevlana houses, 283,551 blankets (including 93,980 from overseas aid), 1,386 quilts, 37 mobile kitchens, 3,051 kitchen sets, 8,701 catalytic stoves (684 from international aid), 5,792 sleeping bags, and 1 mobile kitchen are present.
The current number of houses collapsed and damaged are as follows according to TRCS:- (Red Cross) Collapsed – 2779 (in the order of 18000-25000 people) Severely Damaged – 21,674 (Uninhabitable) (in the order of 150000-225000 people) Moderately Damaged/Slightly Damaged – 34,924. Undamaged – 28,630. [source CATDAT/EDIM].
Although it was around 40F this afternoon, it is envisaged that the region could get as low as 0C tonight with a chance of snow.

Yen,
I was checking on the building regs here in the UAE and in theroy all buildings are designed to withstand a certain factor of movement.
We are subject to the odd ground shaking now and again as I believe we are close to the line running through Iran.
Would I be correct in saying such building regs dont exist in that area of Turkey?
Or are they ignored with terrible consequences?

Building regs cover safety only from what I've heard and do not cover standard of finish - basically they don't care if your windows leak, your floors are uneven or your damp problems are solved, they only care how quickly it will fall down in an earthquake and if your stairs and ceilings are to the required spec. (whatever they are).
Building regulations laws have recently been passed in Turkey and all new buildings must be approved and certified by the Turkish Building Standards Authority (Yapi Denetimi), and that (external) building work can only be done outwith the summer months. This could enable Turkey to replace its complex building code, which is about 75 pages long, with a five-page version that would be more easily understood and applied by engineers.
Mind you, this must be for inland towns and cities, elsewhere in Turkey, as we have had that as a bye-law in Alanya and other coastal towns for years. Since we bought our place in Alanya since 2004 anyway.
Even this above “ Yapi Denetimi” document is a bit too long-winded (and difficult to understand!) and fails to tell you anything 'constructive'.
When there is a new development going up, if one is in situ like you are and, at times, me, you can see how the workers carry out the work.... the amount of corner (and cost)-cutting would make a cowboy blush. Personally, and from what I've seen, building work is, in a word – crap.
It seems to me that builders keep the Regs a closely guarded secret amongst themselves, and if you do manage to procure such a document, it'll all be in Turkish anyway!.
Sorry I can't be any more specific than that
Even the Culture Minister, Ertuðrul Günay, admits that there is a low standard of workmanship in Turkey's building trade. (my post in this thread on 5th).

which is just across the bay from us in Alanya, and about 20 miles northwest of the airport city of Antalya.
