Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet embrace each other on the Titanic prow, Batman stands in front of his Bat-mobile, Spiderman lies on the roof of a bus and King Kong looks impressive as always.
Even if he is made of sand.
This is the section of Antalya’s Lara Beach Park where the 5th Sandland Festival is held.
Every year professional sculptors from various countries create sand sculptures.
This year’s theme was Hollywood.
All well-known movie stars and characters are present, together with famous scenes from Hollywood blockbusters such as Jurassic Park and Lord of the Rings.
It is fun guessing which films are pictured. Some are obvious, with others we have a sneaky peek on the signs.
Movie soundtracks in the background and special lighting in the evening should make any visitors feel as if they have wandered into a Hollywood studio, as the organisers hope.
If you happen to be in Antalya* then the Sandland Festival is certainly worth a visit. The creation of these detailed, sometimes even lifelike sculptures, from just water and sand never fails to fascinate people.
Thousands of tons of sand have been used for the festival.
Not all types of sand can be used, a certain texture is needed.
This year 25 artists from 11 different countries created the sculptures. They started work in April, and on 1st May the festival was opened. The rainfall during May had no ill effect on the statues; they can withstand adverse weather conditions. The sand absorbs the rain and any damage done by heavy drops falling, would be easy to mend anyway.
The sculptures were accessible to be visit until November.
Last year’s Sandland Festival attracted 160,000 visitors, this year some 200,000.
The festival was open to visitors daily from 10 am – 11pm until 14th November 2011.
Admission fee TL 8.
Location: Lara Beach Park, Antalya.
