Just a heads up, At the moment lots of people are receiving phone calls from a company reporting to be Microsoft.
They say that at the last automatic update of your windows system they received a error report and they need to help you fix it.
Just put the phone down all they want to do is gain remote access to your PC so they can put a file on that will then cost you 50 quid to remove via another company that is the same as the one that infected your machine.
I have had 2 calls today i managed to keep the second one on the phone for 23 Min's lol wasting their time, hope they phone again

We get about 7 or 8 of these 'let us fixit' calls a week, every week, and not just from Microsoft, either.
How the feck does someone in an office on the other side of the world (Mumbai or wherever?) know you actually have a computer, never mind knowing whether there's something wrong with it? Near damn impossible.
Not only do they want to charge you for 'fixing it', - which more often than not does bu99eR all, they sometimes add a virus to their 'fixit'.
I just keep 'em talking for 5-10 minutes taking the p£$$ until they hang up in frustration and I get a good laugh at their expense!

Cheers for that, not had them yet.
Most of our cons come through e-mail, ever get one offering to pay in full by credit card on the first contact, no reply!
Laughed that you both do what I do and keep them tied up, get a real buzz when a salesperson, particularly energy companies, put the phone down on me. I love disrupting their script, keep asking questions whilst they are trying to read it.

That's the way to go - frustrate them, extract the Michael, get them agitated then at the end ... tell them 'I don't have a computer' or 'Thanks, but no thanks, I've got one ( of whatever commodity) already and have no need for another'!

They get the details by companies who sell your details on if you have a email address they take it for granted you have a pc. I find telling them that i have a linux operating system soon shuts them up lol

Pardon my ignorance, Sher, but how does a 'Linux OS' have any different bearing on the issue, as opposed to, say, XP ?

that's easy Yeni its not on their pre written script as they think everybody has a windows machine lol so they don't know which page to turn too.
Best one is go through it with them and ask as many questions as possible and at the end say "Do i need a Internet connection and how do i get one" normal put the phone down before you get chance to laugh at them

You lnow its a scam when they start the call with.... "Can I talk to Michael Smith please?" (name changed!!!!!) The personal number, or indeed mobile number has been filched from any number of sources, CV's on monster, electoral roles, directories etc. I always respond with, "Who, sorry, bad line, Who again......."?
