As a boy, I can remember mixing up papier mâché to make something. What I produced, carefully and patiently, was in the midst of a large kitchen-shaped mess. I was quite proud of the result, but for some reason my parents started encouraging me towards Lego shortly afterwards, thus curtailing a promising career. I can only assume that Allen and Patty Eckman had parents who were more appreciative of high art. Certainly, this couple has made a successful career from paper sculpture, and I’ll grudgingly admit that their results are a little better than mine. To take a look at what’s possible, visit this page which gathers together some of their best sculptures: www.beautifullife.info/art-works/paper-sculpture-by-allen-and-patty-eckman/Not bad at all. Rather impressive, in fact. Of course, they’re older than I was, and this probably wasn’t their first try. If you’d like to see more, head along to the Eckmans’ own website at eckmanfineart.com where you can also buy your own unique item of paper sculpture. (I’d sell you some of mine but, unbelievably, it was simply thrown away after being scraped off the walls.)
