I don't know how old SC ('Gazette') is, but I would hazard a guess at early-mid thirties?
And I would summise that he is a pretty well-educated sort of guy. (though some on here might dispute that!)
Now, in his report of last night's game in today's 'Gazette' he makes a bizarre (to me) reference to 'half-crowns' and 'Decimal Day' (15 February 1971), and I can't find anything which connects that to Blackpool FC nor the significence of the ref., other than the fact that that date is two weeks prior to our last league game at Bloomfield Road against the Hammers.
Or is that another of Steve's way of 'padding out' an article?
Can somebody please enlighten me.
He further comments by saying "I'm not sure how many half-crowns would take yo cover the transfer fees of Torres and Carroll, but I'm guessing a fair few bagfuls."
For your information, Steve:
The half crown was a denomination of British money worth two shillings and sixpence, being one-eighth of a pound and half of a crown.
The half crown was demonetised (ahead of other pre-decimal coins) on 1 January 1970, the year before the United Kingdom adopted decimal currency on Decimal Day.
Another way of saying it was "two bob and a tanner".
Working on that basis
Torres would come in at 400 million 'half-crowns'
Carroll would have cost 280 million 'half-crowns'
I would say that that IS a 'fair few bagfuls'.
(and it looks and sounds better in half-crowns!)
Everybody should be happy now?
YL.
p.s. Just waiting for Ye Olde to get online - he will love this post - another opportunity for him to call me a 'smart-arse'!
