Definition only slightly changed
To the owner or operator of a "sick shed", the symptoms may include high levels of supporter sickness or absenteeism, lower productivity, low team satisfaction and high fan turnover. Clarification of the link between a sick building and supporters happiness has and will likely continue to result in increased fan moans . Business owners will likely find increasingly happy customers and a better bottom line with successful healing of sick buildings. So now we have it,the shed is officially sick! So how to find a cure? Well for those who haven't had the "pleasure" lets start right at the beginning, getting into the damn thing! As you leave the main body of Pool supporters at the back of the Kop and head towards back Henry st you are immediately funnelled into an area that can only be described as backstage at a cheap fairground towards a little corner where 4 turnstiles are crammed, walking over unfinished building works strange scaffolding structures and more police than you can shake a stick at,and if your really lucky you have to get out of the way as they take the warm up goals off the pitch and store them in a corner of the car park!By the time you finally get to the turnstile any feeling of excitement you had is well and truly quashed as the fact you paid £35 quid to be treated like cattle dawns. So feeling about as welcome as an away supporter at the old Boothferry park (sorry its the only analogy I can come up with) you finally get in the ground and make your way past the Porto cabin loo's take a quick look at the what is laughingly referred too as the "Refreshments"area and realize any idea of a quick pint before kickoff is only a wild fantasy. In fact I couldn't even tell you if you can get a pint I'v never got close enough! You then get your fist proper look at the ground a sea of Tangerine on three sides, and a wall of stewards making damn sure your not a part of it as you are moved on from the corner of the Kop where the "Home" supporters are making their way out from the bar to their seats. As you walk along in front of the shed taking in the atmosphere, the excitement returns, listening to the mumblings of that guy in the 50's raincoat wondering what he's saying as there doesn't appear to be any pa anywhere near you. So finally to your seat noting that this time you have a clear view of the goal at the Kop end but if we score at Jimmy's end its going to take a bit of jumping about to see it.Taking a look round at your fellow Poolers many in their bright new Pool merchandise it suddenly dawns on you how quiet it is.The only sound you can hear is the away fans singing and that the sound from the other three stands seems to have disappeared! As was so aptly put by another poster who referred to it as "the silent witness"stand, I can assure you it is silent, and this is my theory why. I'm guessing that a lot of the people sitting in the shed are new fans(I wont call them supporters for obvious reasons) and in many cases this is their first season watching the Pool and they just don't know how to be supporters! Having spent years watching the Footy on the Telly the idea that you get involved doesn't seem to have registered with a lot of them.It appears to me that its a case of sit down and watch with the attitude "go on entertain me",with no understanding of what really being at a match is all about.I for one shout myself hoarse slagging off the lines person! the ref the opposition players, offering encouragement to the team applauding a good pass,a near miss a solid tackle and generally doing what I believe a supporter should do,unfortunately in the shed I appear to be one of a very few who do. So what needs to be done? Well a bit of building this summer is a must, guess I'm going to have to say "If we stay up"as we know it wont happen if we dont. The corners must be filled in if only so the patrons of the shed dont feel like away fans, and in the process better loo's bar and turnstiles. Greatly improve the PA system so at least the people in the stand can hear "Glad all over" when we score and have a chance of joining in and feeling a part of the "Home" support One major problem we cant do anything about though is its too far away from the pitch, that combined with its stunning ability to muffle the sound of the rest of the ground is a problem that would appear to be beyond us.Though make it a bit taller and there by adding more seats and getting it a bit closer to the pitch would help. How feasible that is,god knows. How do you educate the new fans into becoming supporters, well I guess if I had the answer to that I wouldn't be sat here at the computer now.Printing song sheets is one idea I have seen mooted, maybe its time for the tangerine brains trust to come up with some ideas, because as micky said if I have to sit in there again I'd rather not go. Going in the Old sratchin shed was always a very different feeling to the rest of the ground. It was very rough and ready, smelt of piss stale beer and fags, but it had atmosphere, wicked patter, its own songs and was filled with mostly drunk blokes, and as a kid I loved it. Ok I'v rambled on enough, its over to you for your thoughts and ideas as to how to cure the "Sick Shed Syndrome"

It does puzzle me BJC why the shed needs so many stewards and police, because after reading what its like in the cattle shed it sounds to me like most people would be to depressed to cause any trouble.

cough cough
I will have you know that we all got shunted from the north to the south and had no real say in the matter until enough people complained and they stopped the moving of season ticket holders.
The problem being we now have Half the vocal support in the south and the rest stuck in the north
but you would have thought by now that the new fans would have worked out the words to the songs lol

to be perfectly honest, I am less worried about the Shed, the crappy toilets, poor snack bar, than I am about the atmosphere. As a non ST, it has been the only place I can get an occasional ticket this year, and I'd stand on a dustbin peering over the fence if that was the only way to see a game. I'm sure ( gulp) it will improve for next season (fingerscrossedcamelsmiley) any of you who know anything about construction would acknowledge it was little short of a miracle to get it up in such a short time. Yes, acoustics of the ground are crap, yes PA is rubbish, and the writing on the Telly is blurry ( or is that my eyesight). maybe, cos I too was used to the Scrattin Shed, it still feels a bit like luxury, with seats and stuff. That said, I agree with everything said about our "fans". Being a tight git, if I pay £30 odd, I want as much as I can get. As a supporter, with one minute to go, I still think we can get another consolation goal, and even if we don't, I want to applaud my team for their efforts at the end. From where I was sat, it looked like the same flow leaving from 70 mins onwards, on all sides of the ground. Maybe it's just we speak a different language, maybe we expect too much, maybe they are all just Prem fans who can see games more locally. Anyway, stuff the lot of the stuffers, when I can afford it I'll be there, I won't be quiet, I won't react to the glares, and I won't leave early. I still struggle to appreciate that we are taking on the best in the land at Little Old Bloomfield Road, and I love it. If others are too shortsighted or short memories to appreciate it, that's their problem. BJC, surely you don't really mean you wouldn't go again. What was great in the old days that all the like minded folk could get together and make some noise, I guess we are now split up too much Would have been much more fun sitting with you, Mick and his lady

Olde like you I'd walk over broken glass for a chance to watch the Pool, and was only reflecting a point made by mickyg, and yes maybe just a first come first seat basis would allow us noisy types to sit together and not feel quite so isolated.I never really have understood why it has to be a named seat.

Now you're talking. It is a serious point though. Just feel a little guilty about taking the piss out of the nobbers singing and non singing sections, maybe they were right. Nah, they couldn't have had a good idea Could they?

No, no, April - nothing further would aggrevate things on here as we're all in it together. At the end of the day we all want the same for 'Pool - a team that we enjoy watching, it's good to watch -it's OUR team -and everybody should speak their mind without the WUMs and virtorol of 606. Everybody is entitled to their say, everybody respects each and everyone's opinion whether they agree or not. Let's hear it, and dissect it (or whatever) in a courteous manner.

Have to agree totally, Yeni One of the great things of this site so far has been our right to argue our point without the personal insults common on 606. I didn't react last night, but having slept on it, and now seen April's comments on another thread as well, I object very strongly to the insult of comparison to menstrual schoolgirls, and the comparison with Nazism or American racism. It really is a delicious irony that those expressing their own view, contrary to this other poster, are accused of being like the most appalingly repressive regimes. We disagree, fine, go for it, but leave the personal insults elsewhere. We do feel strongly about this lack of support, if someone does want to sit quietly, good for them, but I am pissed off with being glared at, told to sit down, etc, when I am expressing my support in the manner that I have been doing for 40 odd years. Do I also not have rights? And if you have not experienced this, I presume that you have been lucky enough to be at games we have won. Rant over and breathe

If you want to sit quietly and watch the game, do it at home on the telly.......the game needs atmosphere and it's the noisy ones who provide it!

Bloody Hell !what in gods name is going on? I sat and wrote this thread to amuse and provoke opinion and to get some ideas as too how the atmosphere could be improved. Not to watch a load of toys being thrown out of prams. I thought us Poolers had thick skins and a gallows sense of humour, maybe I was wrong.

Nobody (I dont think) is trying to intimidate anyone into doing anything they dont want to.The question posed by this post was.The atmosphere in the shed is crap how can it be improved. Sorry but I will continue to wonder about that, and as it happens yes I will carry on giving abuse to the early leavers, and trying to encourage people to join in. If your opinion is the atmosphere is fine ok (I take it you sit in the shed)then just say so.

April, why do you have to again make an unpleasant comment re "flying over your head"
I believe it is called a red herring when setting up a counter argument to something that was not said or implied in the first place. The others will very capably answer for themselves, I don't want to have everyone do the things I want, but I do question the atmosphere, which was awful on Wednesday. And that doesn't help the team. And that is what I do want, our twelfth man back.
I genuinely believe, as a Grumpy Old Man, that many want to take out without putting in, and that is our basic problem at B/R at the moment. The atmosphere will be better if we are winning, but that won't happen that often, so what is your answer to the original post?

Sherlock, with due respect, I believe this is a very contentious matter affecting everyone, both on here, and at Blackpool FC, and, that said, it should be discussed and dissected in public on this board rather than in private in the chat room, no?
YL.
p.s. Apart from the fact that I can't get into the chat room for some infuriating techy reason.

Yep! It will more than likely be one or both.
Anyway, I've no time for 'chatting' - prefer to see things out in the open air & not debated in some smokey corner like some are wont to do. HP even?
