“Safety the only measure of success – Evatt”
Just an article I nearly passed by…..
'Honest stopper Ian Evatt is refusing to call himself a true Premier League player until struggling Blackpool ensure their top-flight safety.
The big centre-half reckons he does not justify the privileged tag for simply climbing out of the Championship.
He said: “If we stay up we can say we are Premier League players because we have done it in this league – but not before.
“If we do it will be our biggest achievement yet.”
Evatt says Blackpool’s bunch of misfits are determined not to give up their new-found status easily. “The rewards are there for everybody to see.
“For a lot of the lads this year has changed their lives and people are starting to realise we have some good players. We are not just a lucky team, we have some very good players. Look at Charlie Adam.“
“A couple of years ago Rangers didn’t want him and now Liverpool have come in for him.
“The financial rewards are there for everybody to see as well. The lads are going to fight tooth and nail to make sure we stay up.”
It’s not just the money though that is driving Blackpool’s desperate fight to cling to their Premier League status.
Evatt added: “It’s the league as well. We are all footballers at the end of the day and we play for Blackpool so it’s not as if we are getting ridiculous money every week.
“This level is the top of the game and all the boys want to one day look back and say: ‘we have achieved something’ by staying up. But if we don’t we will be failures.”
Let's take that last sentence - “But if we don’t we will be failures.”
Not to my mind, they won’t - they exceeded expectations just by getting into the Prem, so, to me, that comment doesn’t hold water,
No matter what anyone says or thinks.
Of course, we’ll have achieved something by staying up, but who expected us to be where we are today?
