MATTY Phillips is determined to be a key man for Blackpool next term after his first season in the Premier League.
The winger was a £350,000 signing from Wycombe in August but the 20-year-old showed he was not just one for the future.
Phillips scored on his debut after coming on against Blackburn and has gone on to make 24 league appearances, although 20 of those have been off the bench, making him the most used sub in the league.
And while the England Under 20 international admits he would have liked more starts for madcap Ian Holloway’s team, he is happy to bide his time as the Seasiders aim to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
“I would love to play a big part in the last three games but I’m not the only one - everybody is pushing and working hard in training,” he said.
“Maybe I’ve not started as much as I’d have liked but this is my first season in the Premier League, so although I’m a little disappointed, I’ve got to be realistic.
“I was playing in League Two for Wycombe at the start of the season, so I know I’ve come a long way in a short space of time. I’m still young and I’ve got so much to learn.
“Next season is huge for me - that’s when I really want to make an impact and try to become a regular.”

Matty is a terrific prospect who has skill and pace to die for. He has lost some confidence lately I think as he worries about defending and not charging forward at every given opportunity. Just needs to get his head up more often and just get a bit tougher on the ball. There's always a buzz when he comes on and Ollie has used him perfectly as a sub for most of this season. A couple of goals will do him the power of good. Lets hope he gets them before the end of the season!

I posted on 606 after the Villa game away, i said that Matty has raw talent and loads of potential and stuck my neck out and said that with age on his side and under the right guideance and he's willing to learn, he will one day become an England regular, and possibly as early as euro 2012. You heard it here first.
