The chairman of Blackpool football club has written to Energy Secretary Chris Huhne asking him if the club can have his three points to help them stave off relegation, writes Crispin Fisher.
“After hearing that Chris has been having trouble getting rid of points in the past we thought we could come to a mutual understanding that will benefit both sides before the game against Manchester United,” said club chairman Karl Oyston.
A spokesman for Huhne said: “Chris is very grateful to Blackpool for their kind offer but sadly at the moment Chris has not got any points to pass on.”
News that Huhne was unable to help the club drew a very angry response from fans. Alan Stafford, 61, who has supported the team for over 40 years said: “All the clubs supporters were pinning their hopes on Huhne but it looks like he has let us all down.”
Mr Stafford believes that millionaire Huhne has snubbed the clubs desperate plea for help because he considers the town to be a bit common.
He said: “Chris Huhne has never made any secret of the fact that he dislikes Blackpool and has always done everything in his powers to get the Lib Dem’s to move their conference somewhere more up market.”
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway is still optimistic that the team can avoid the drop without Huhne’s points but admits the chances of getting a result at Old Trafford are fairly slim.
He said: “At home the United defence has been has tight as a camels arse in a sandstorm so it will take a real special effort on our part to beat them.”
If Blackpool fail to beat United Holloway says he will get the coach driver to put his foot down on the M57 in the hope that they might pick up the points they need for survival.
