The day really began in F&B's when we met up for our last pint of the season,it was good to see familiar faces but it was obvious we where all both nervous and exited at the prospect of the afternoon.
Our nerves where not done any favours when Bolton scored from their first attack after only a few minutes, but from there on in excitement took over as it became obvious this was not going to be another Wigan day as the players seemed even more determined to get back into it,and into it they did get with a lovely strikers goal from DJ.
After that you just couldn't take your eyes off it as it was plain to see that the spirit of last year (you score one,we score two)was back.2-1 to us 2-2 ,3-2 and not a scrappy goal amongst them though I would say the pick of the first half goals was Punchies lovely curler which followed a spell of one touch football that had me purring with delight.
The second half was never going to live up to the pace of the first, but having let Bolton back in we yet again pulled our socks up and scored a lovely winner that for me epitomised everything we have come to love about this team of players.
A great clearing header out of defence by Evo, Gnashers scrapping for the ball putting his body on the line with a header through to Charlie who drove up the middle of the pitch before playing the ball to GTF and with DJ pulling their defenders all over the place played the ball back into Charlies path and bang a sweet left foot into the top corner.
After that we all pretty much lived on our nerves untill the ref having played the longest 4 minutes of extra time I can remember finally blew his whistle and we knew for sure that the story wasn't over yet.
Who did and didn't play well? for me there was only one bad performance and that was Matt Gilks I'v kept my powder dry in the debate about him this last few weeks but I have to ask myself, would kingson have saved any of the goals he let in?for me the answer is yes. I did think he would bring a bit of solidity to the defence but the truth is he hasn't,he may be stronger in a crowded penalty area from corners and free kicks but his shot stopping has been poor and I feel he could and should have done better with all three goals yesterday.
Other than that they where hero's to a man and for that reason I cant pick a single MOM but I will give 10/10 to Baps,Evo,Gnashers,GTF and DJ,that the rest got 9/10 shows how I feel.
As I waited for the players to come back out I heard that Wolves had won so elation turned to disappointment as a quick calculation had me thinking that it now looks like next week is another "must win" game.
So as the players passed me on their lap of honour and Charlie threw his top into the crowd(great to see even some of the plastics in the east stayed behind ) the thought went through my head "If we dont win next week how many of these will this be the last time I see them in a Tangerine shirt"?
So its down to the wire, who would have thought at the start of the season that on the last day we would have 39pts and still be in danger of relegation?not me for one,but this is where we are and we know what we have to do.
Can we do it?too bloody right we can, after yesterdays display I still feel there is one final twist to this amazing season. It's 11 v 11 it's Wembley all over again only this time we are playing a team with nothing to play for where as for us glory awaits.
So fellow Tangerines see you in F&B's first game next season, whatever division we are in.The fat lady is on hold lets stick a sock in her mouth and send her elsewhere.
