SIR ALEX Ferguson has indicated an intention to bypass Premier League rules by telling Ian Holloway that if Manchester United have sewn up the title before the last day of the season, he’ll play against them himself.
The pair joked after the Blackpool boss phoned Ferguson to congratulate him after United’s performance in the Champions League semi-final against Schalke and talk turned to the remainder of the season.
“We got chatting, and he asked who have you got next – so I mentioned Tottenham, and Bolton, and said, of course, we finish up against you,” said Holloway. “I said I hoped they’d have the title wrapped up by then, and he said, ‘If we have, I’ll play myself against you, my old son!’
“I’ll hold him to that – although one of the members of my staff saw him play in Scotland, and he said the way Sir Alex’s teams play are a mirror of the way he used to go about it, the same energy and enthusiasm.” Holloway, who yesterday said he had no intention of walking out on Blackpool at the end of the season despite being linked with the West Ham job, stressed that Ferguson was only joking.
But it is a sign that the United manager again plans to ignore Premier League rule E20. It states that “in every league match each participating club should field a full-strength team”.
United made 10 changes to the team that faced relegation-threatened Hull on the final day of the 2009 season and two years earlier left several stars out of a team which lost to West Ham on the final day, resulting in relegation for Sheffield United.

Just maybe Ollie should have kept that conversation quiet. The media will just love it and it won't do us or SAF any favours.
