Excuse me if I just get this off my chest!
Fans of any club take loyalty to their team to the extreme and rightly or wrongly expect the same from the players they pay to watch every week.
We feel they are part of hopes and dreams for the club and represent everything we would feel if only we were talented enough to play ourselves. If I could play like Charlie I would sign up for the pool for a couple of beers a week and still feel honoured.
The fact is that the vast majority of players play for teams they don't support.
Accept the fact that it is a career like any other and players will move for money and earn as much as they can. Most have no interest about the heritage of the club or even care about the ambition unless it rewards them personally. Mangers are completely different as they have emotional investment in "their" team.
The big difference in football is contracts where players/managers are given extra large rewards for a fixed term contract to enable the team to build and the club to be successful. Contracts are two way and should be balanced and fair.
This is an area where we seem to have sold ourselves short on too many occasions. Agents and lawyers are buzzing around trying to undo signed contracts and generally unsettling players (and managers) with the promised of .......you guessed it.....more money.
So in summary
We can't expect players to show any loyalty to the Club however painful this may be to the fans.
We can expect loyalty from our manager but he must be paid to reflect his value.
Our contracts need to be of some substance and reflect our ambitions.
So cummon Karl give Ollie the tools to build for the long term and stop all this short termism with loans and iffy 6 month deals.
Whilst your at it give him a 3 year contract worthy of his value to BFC.
