Well I bet Karl's old calculator is red hot at the moment as he begins to see the reality of relegation, and the loss of both money, players and no doubt more than a few plastics.
We all already know that there is pretty much no chance of hanging onto Charlie and Vaughny. It looks like DJ is going to be the next to be lured away as word of his release clause gets round. With reduced contracts offered to the rest of the squad Evo and Crains and no doubt a few others will be looking at what they have been offered and the players leaving and wondering if this is the time to look to pastures new,and frankly who could blame them.
Add to this the fact that Ollie must be wondering are the club as ambitious as he is and you realise that this is the pivotal point of Karls tenure as Chairman/chief exec.A wrong move now and the wheels could well and truly come off.He now has the unenviable job of managing the books while trying to keep Ollie and whats left of the squad here.
So putting yourself in Karls shoes, and very nice shoes they are too, what would you do?
I'v posed the question so I guess I have to go first and stick my neck out and hope it doesn't get knocked off!
First I feel he needs to do three things to show the club is still ambitious. One commit to and begin work on the s/e corner stand, two make a couple of quick good signings and three get those players in who may be tempted to leave and offer them better contracts. If as we are lead to believe they are being offered £5,000 p.w tops at the moment we frankly have no chance of keeping them if we dont at the very least do points 1,2.
Now before people go ballistic on me and say £5,000 a week is good money, and I agree I'd love to be earning that we have to be realistic and say its not enough to attract and keep the class of player we as supporters want and more importantly need to mount a real challenge in the Championship,ok the bonus for promotion helps but jam tomorrow is never going to attract top players not when jam today is on offer elsewhere.
One thing I'm sure of is that whatever he decides to do he is going to have to do it soon as the longer it takes the more disillusioned both Ollie, the players and supporters will get and the temptation to look for pastures new increases.
Sorry if this comes over as a bit of a doomsday thread, and maybe it wont matter if the american God botherer is right and it all ends in October anyway!its just that if it does end then I'd like to be in the position of heading to hell at least knowing we gave it our best shot.
