Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill is signing Derby County striker Luke Varney in a £750,000 deal - as he looks to fill David Nugent’s scoring boots.
Cotterill has cash to bring in new players and has agreed a fee with the Rams for Varney who spent last season on loan at Blackpool in the Premier League.
Varney is prepared to stay in the Championship with Pompey - and the price will increase if he is a success and helps them to win promotion.

Funny but I'v felt since January that for some reason we where not going to sign him. Can only hope Ollie has someone better in mind.

I am sure ollie has but we have to watch that we don't become of thanks for the seaon now sod off or we will find it hard to sign people in the future.
I was hoping to see a couple of season long loans in place of some youngsters from the prem by now.. might already have been sorted but the club are so slow with feeding news these days

I wanted Varney to sign for Pool, as he was committed and even stated if he had a choice of two clubs and one of them was Blackpool, he'd choose Blackpool straightaway......... Thought Varney did brilliant in the first part of last season, scoring some vital goals in the process. Not sure what the thinking is behind this.

Methinks Pompey can offer him a few thousand quid more than us, apart from a longer contract........ C'mon, KO, we're losing out in the decent players category - there'll certainly be no 'Ollies Award' for you this year! YL. p.s. Surely we've got a million quid lying about somewhere with which we could have got him... (if the fee was the problem, not.)

Maybe ollie just does not want him? he was great at the start of the season but became hit and miss after Christmas, So maybe something ollie does not like about him, we will never know

Seems to be similar to the Dobbie situation from last season.
I wonder if he is surplus to requirments now at Swansea

Yep the wages are the Problem and i think we are right not to pay 20k a week, if its true that crainey has been offered 15k i believe that we should not go above that figure its still far and above our normal weekly wage. One step at a time and move in the right direction

...and now for the real reason(s) Varney didn't sign back on for us....
"...despite his craving to return to the Premier League.... .....says he is prepared to go to a Championship side which "has the ambition" to get to the top flight." (Gazette, quote)
and we don't?
"...I'm in a position where I can be a bit more picky now." he says.
Eh?
Oh, quite apart from the fact that we are not able to match his wages at Direby - and Plymouth can?
Another 'grass is greener' scenario, I would say.
Thanks, lad, and good luck. (You'll need it down there.)
YL.

The question i have is Portsmouth are in the right Sh*t financially and couldn't even pay some of the builders that had done work on Fratton park a year ago and were only saved by administrators from going bust at the 11th hour, so with a club with no money and shafting ex and current employees out of jobs and money, how the hell is this possible and allowed to pay such high wages. Some of the builders that did the work lost their businesses as Pompey owed them so much, but the agreement with the administrators was to pay playing staff only, just ludicrous, the world of football has gone mad....

Yep you got that right 79. You could start a whole website and talk about nothing else than whats going wrong with Football. This is where I would like to know more what Karls thoughts are about football finances,we all appear able to see how its unsustainable but Fans keep demanding it and Clubs keep doing it. Strange thing is too me though is as one of the clubs with money to invest like real money not mortgages and "loans" from rich sugar daddies. How come we don't appear to be able to take advantage of the situation.A few deals like the one we did for Charlie and we would be chocolate biscuits.

They can afford to pay the wages for one simple reason at the moment they are spendig 80% of gate money on wages and if they take varney on they will then have a squad of 10 players.. at the moment they have 9 players on the books
