Dear Mr Holloway,
Just thought I'd drop you a line, I know Kim keeps you up to date on the fans sites. Saw your news conference and read your Indi article, and thought you looked like you were less confident than normal. You were questioning whether our success was down to your managing or our three stars who have now left.
Let me take you back 2 years. Blackpool, with a new manager, 3rd in 6 months, were relegation favourites. In the next six months, you changed the tactics of the existing players, taught all out attacking football, transformed several players with motivation or fitness issues, and steadily climbed up the table, culminating in Blackpool, the team I have supported since 1971, getting back into the top flight. Almost as important, you gave pride back to the town. The images of the day of the bus parade and presentation on that hot day on the Prom are forever burnt into my mind, it seemed that every Blackpool fan and resident from around the world was there.
And the pundits wrote us off, worse team ever, won't get to Derby's total, League one players, blah, blah. Only you, the team and us supporters had the faith in your all out attacking style. Even at the top level, it worked, and little Blackpool, on a shoe string budget, with a mad manager, players playing out of their skins, the loudest supporters in the land, nearly made it, against teams who had players who earned more than our whole team. Yes, Charlie, and Vaughnie and DJ played their roles, but it was the roles you allocated, to the tactics you devised, with a team you selected. And all the doubters and snobs were proved wrong, we became everyone's second team, our football was drooled over, fans up and down the land wanted their teams to play attractive attacking football, and the 8 man defensive rubbish others played was derided as hoofball.
So here we are again. You said our supporters need to be humble, there are too many think we can walk straight back into the prem. I think you will find most of us have had a ball for the last two years, and look forward to whatever can come along this season, and next, and the next. The club is stable, has 4 sides ( don't laugh, you should have seen it all those years ago when fans were sending in donations to keep it alive), and has a future. Some of your summer signings look really exciting prospects for the next few year, some of the short fast passing at Hull shows you are still developing the skills to be like Real Madrid. The fitness that cost us last season when the guys were running so hard for so long looked great. We can go in any pub and talk football without being sneered at, actually, when they find out you're a Tangerine they want to talk about us and particularly you. Your views on FIFA have been quoted as common sense at the highest levels.
I would end by saying ignore the instant fix, I want it now critics. Do it the way you know is right, please keep attacking, making players play your way, occasionally reminding them what a privileged position they are in, and lets' look forward to another exciting season together.
Oh, and do keep saying whatever you think at Press Conferences, don't let them get to you
Yours
Rodg
