My name is Andy and I live in St Annes and my son has a Blackpool Season Ticket, but I was born and raised in Plymouth, and have been an Argyle fan all my life. You have probably heard of the disgraceful situation that Argyle have been put in in recent months and how the players, staff and fans have rallied together to keep our beloved club afloat.
Can I draw your attention to a press release regarding support for Argyle's cause taking place in 2 week's time both at Home Park and at Brighton's match - you'll see why Brighton when you read it.
What all Argyle fans would love, is for as many fans as possible around the country to show solidarity with our plight, and show/wear something green at some point in their match, or even through the whole match. If some of your more 'vocal' posters could possibly get the word out about this for your away match at Portsmouth on the 24th, (only 40 miles from Brighton) the Green Army would be very, very appreciative. I'm sure Ollie would understand - he used to love the colour green once when he led us to 5th in the championship and to the quarter finals of the FA Cup! Anyway, here's the press release:
PRESS RELEASE
GO GREEN FOR ARGYLE – Brighton & Hove Albion v Leeds, Friday 23 Sept 2011, American Express Community Stadium
FANS REUNITED – Plymouth Argyle v Macclesfield Town, Saturday 24 Sept, Home Park
In the worst of times for Brighton fans, as we were battling to save our club from greedy moneymen and coming up with all kinds of plans to publicise our plight, a 14 year old Plymouth fan called Richard Vaughan gave us perhaps the best idea of all – a call to fans from all over the country to come to a Brighton home game in a show of solidarity. We called it Fans United, and at our game against Hartlepool on February 8th 1997 our long-lost Goldstone Ground was packed with supporters of clubs from all over England and many from mainland Europe. The atmosphere was fantastic, we won the game 5-0 and the whole event was an integral part of our long and ultimately successful campaign which, 14 years later, sees us in our brand new stadium and sitting proudly on top of the Championship....
Now it’s time to pay Plymouth back for the help they gave us. Argyle are now in a similar position to us back then – threatened with liquidation, future of their Home Park ground uncertain, trust in their Board long disappeared. At our televised home match with Leeds on Friday 23 Sept we are asking all fans attending to ‘Go Green for Argyle’ just before kick off - there will be banners, scarves, card displays, balloons, hopefully a green back to the match programme and more. We aim to highlight Argyle’s plight to the widest possible audience – and then of course cheer the Albion on to three points!
The following day, 24 Sept, Argyle have a home match against Macclesfield and, in the spirit of that game back in 1997, we are calling on fans from all over Britain and beyond to come to Home Park in a show of solidarity. We love the game and believe it should be run by people who love it too, and our victorious struggle to save our club shows that, as the saying goes, fans united – and reunited - really will never be defeated. Profiteers out of football – it’s our game, not theirs!
