The former Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton midfielder was found hanged at his home in Chester this morning.
Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the 42 year-old's death.
The Football Association of Wales confirmed the news, saying that Speed's family had authorised the release of the information.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 7.08am on Sunday 27 November 2011, Cheshire police was informed of a sudden death at an address in Huntington, Chester.
"Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead. The next of kin have been informed and have confirmed the identity of the man as Gary Speed.
"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death the family have requested that they are left in peace to grieve at this difficult time. A family tribute will be released at a later date but not today.
"The force later confirmed that the dead man was Speed."
After hearing of the news, Manchester United striker Michael Owen, who lives near the star, tweeted: "Just cannot believe the news regarding Gary Speed. We waved at each other a couple of days ago dropping our kids off at school. I'm numb."

I watched him on Football Focus yesterday and cannot believe that anything was wrong with him. It is a very sad loss of a great man for Welsh football. My thoughts are with his Wife and Children RIP.

Gob smacked, reading the comments from his friends, he must have been keeping his feelings walled away. Thoughts with his family and friends at this awful time.
Let us hope, with the Leveson enquiry going on, the media behave responsibly for once in their miserable little lives.

Because of the kind of person he was his passing has evoked in all walks of life. Even those who didnt know him, or of him, have been left stunned. I can only explain it in that somebody special has been taken from us and somehow we all know it. RIP Gary. Our thoughts are with your family and friends.

I do hope that the rumors that are starting to come to the surface that the Sun newspaper where about to put him through the news international crap news machine are untrue.
If they had any part in it, i think its time for murdock and co to be shown the door and not allowed to own any newspaper in this country.
