1967............. We had just dropped down from the 1st division, bit like this season, it was a culture as I had watched Pool play for 18 years in division one, but we were at least top of the league with Palace so going back up after one season wasn't that bad. We didn't of course. Our manager at the time, a mr Stan Mortensen, some of you may have heard of him, ex footballer was very upbeat about our chances of promotion, my youngest daughter had just been born and I was taking up a position at Speke airport (now renamed after a famous singer). I payed my shilling to get in at Bloomfield road and sixpence for the programme. Under the supporters club notes in the programme was a paragraph; We have opened a shop in the former ticket office behind the South stand with mr and mrs J Benton in charge. We have for sale lapel badges, duffle bag badgers, scarves, car stickers, ball points and hand books and we are gradually widening our range. Spike Milligan was appearing at the Grand Theatre, Jack Dempsey was wrestling at the Tower Circus Wrestling and Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise were at the Opera House. Our team that Saturday was; Taylor, Armfield, Mowbray, Milne, James, McPhee, Skirton, Craven, Ingram, Green, Oates, the sub to named later. WE WON 2-0, roll on this saturday and lets hope history repeats itself.

45 years ago - was it that so long ago?
Actually, I thought you were going to ask the question - "Who was the 'singer'?" re Liverpool/Speke airport.

I was at that game Whits.
If its the same game Jimmy Armfield scored one of his rare goals for us and it was raining cats and dogs for the full game. I mentioned it to Sir Jim at a function last year and he knew the size of the crowd but wouldnt even discuss his goal such is his modesty. Like I said, I think it was the same game and if so I can remember like it was yesterday. I had a gorgeus Irish girl on my arm on the day which has helped me remember,,,,,lol.
Sigh,,,,, happy days.
