Just a few random thoughts, thoroughly enjoyed the game, does that make me sad?
Nice to see Yeni and the South Shore Crew beforehand, the F&B's boycott must be hurting, reckon the prices will soon be down cos it was a tad quiet in there.
Very surprised to hear Keith on the teamsheet, and was absolutely delighted at the response of the Pool faithful when the team was announced, I hope those who keep writing him off will stop pretending they are in a majority, at least this season. I was then surprised to see he was running the midfield, everything going through him, layoffs, pushing forward, waving his arms and exhorting.
For the whole of the first half, I was relaxed and awaiting a goal. They had obviously brought a very large bus to park, but with Matty running at them and getting past again and again, KP with clever little layoffs and flicks, I just felt it was only a matter of time, but it never came. The ref was already stamping his mark on the game, apparently it is now acceptable to tackle our players with an arm round the throat, and turned down what looked like a good penalty call from a long way away!
Second half, started a bit slower, and then Keith got crocked. Poor tackle ( no foul, surprisingly , he had to go off, marking not tight enough and they put away a good chance. KS trying to get back on, Thommo arm round ushering him for treatment. This nonsense where they can tag a player, he has to go off and you are left one down isn't fai, remember Evo last season? By the way, was anyone close enough to see whether he really does bleed Tangerine?
It all got a bit ragged then, Pool pushing forward, but every cross met by a veritable forest of Wendys, they often seemed to have 7 in the box defending. GTF certainly added urgency and direction, a real captain's role.
I thought Dicko was very focused on the penalty area, look forward to seeing more of him.His card was a travesty, particularly as the man in Black had just turned down another penalty. Incey again very quick, but them huge blokes pushed him off the ball, someone needs to help him stay on the ball under a strong physical challenge, huge fan, though.
Then the penalty that was given, second week running, GTF getting to where he shouldn't, star man. As KP had been a little quiet, I wondered for a second who would take it. Then saw the little man step up with the ball in his hands, big goalie towering over him trying to intimidate him, and I thought, there is no one in English Football I would rather there was taking this. You only have to read other message boards to see the awe and fear in which he is held. Superb strike.
Few other odd thoughts
Matt Gilks is superb, well done
I would love someone to help Eards with his shooting, he had a few opportunities and didn't do much, I still remember his great free kick last year, I think he has a lot more potential for a game like that.
Would love to see KP playing off a big striker, but I don't see how that could fit Ollie's system, and Ollie is the man.
We need to rely on Matty Phillips less, he had a quiet spell in the second, but he doesn't half cover some ground at speed. For me, he is the outstanding player in the squad at present.
Very encouraged with the signings, Bednar sounds like the big CF we have been after, certainly did us some damage for West Brom, Dicko looks quick, and you can never have too many of those, as they wear out and get kicked, presume Fleck wasn't fit, unless he's playing Tuesday.
All in all, very happy at the moment, certainly got enough players to give it a real go on the replay, and options for the first team when the fixture congestion starts.
And on a final note, delighted to be sitting with a bunch of people in the North who sang their hearts out, didn't whinge, and were postive thoroughout, I salute you
