On the weekend of 29Th October 1932 Blackpool experienced one of its worst storms in history and the town was left in dismay with 20 tons of sand being washed up on the north promenade alone.
That weekend would go down in history and a rare event happened at Bloomfield Road and in football history when some Chelsea players refused to carry on playing the match in the second half.
Blackpool won the match 4-0 with Hampson scoring 3 of the goals, Just before half time the Chelsea left back retired from the match with cramp so they played the last 5 Min's of the first half with just ten men.
When the teams came out for the second half only 8 Chelsea plays took to the field as 2 of the team thought the conditions where not fit to play in and refused to start, after 5 Min's they decided to rejoin the action so Chelsea had 10 men again.
In the 75Th min Hampson scored his 3rd goal and pools 4Th at which point the 2 players walked off again and went to the dressing room and never returned so Chelsea once again only had 8 men on the field of play.
In the 78Th min the rain increased and with a arctic gale blowing another 2 players left the pitch to join their team mates in the dressing room leaving Chelsea with just 6 players for the finale 12 Min's.
All the players left without asking the ref but the match result stood, the Chelsea chairman ranted that the game should never have been played while the Blackpool players sang in the team bath at the result.
After the match the Chelsea players left wrapped in blankets on the way to the train station while the pool players but coats and hats on and walked home to return the next morning for light training.
The local papers of the time said the ref was correct in playing the match and that the Chelsea Players where just Southern softies
