With the good ship tangerine ready to set sail for another season I thought now would be a good time to look at the season ahead and whether plain sailing or troubled waters lie ahead.
So let’s start at the top and work down.
Our Chairman and all that jazz
At Blackpool we seem to have our very own pantomime villain in the shape of Karl. 50% of the fans admire what he does while the other 50% would like to see his severed head on a spike outside the Tower of London!
So he fits the chairman’s role well as I imagine its much the same at most football clubs, just look at Man Utd and still a majority of the fans want the owners out.
At the end of the day Karl is Karl and it will always be his way or the highway. As frustrating as it is to some fans it’s never going to change because his family own the club and it’s a business and not a rich man’s play thing like some club owners.
Yes I get annoyed and frustrated at some of things that are or not done like everybody else, but will always be proud of how the club has developed over the 30 plus years I have been watching Blackpool and hope Karl and the family can take it to the next level - admittedly probably at a pace that does not suit most fans.
The Manager or Sir Ian as some of us like to call him
Ian is probably the best manager the club has seen in the last 2 decades and deserves the high regard that the fans hold him in.
But he is so much more than that .He probably has one of the best football manager’s brains in the country and we have been taken on a fantastic journey by him over the last few years.
Forever classed as a fool or jester by the press, which in fairness has probably hindered his chances when chairman are looking for a new manager. However he is neither a jester or fool, just a plain speaking man who wears his heart on his sleeve.
We all watched at the start of last season how affected Ian was by relegation and the demons he was fighting within himself. This rubbed off on the already down in the dumps squad and it took a call from Mickey to kick him up the arse and fire himself and the team up.
Some would say it should not have affected him that deeply but I would take a person who cares about the club over somebody who just says “oh well”.
The summer was spent with fans going into melt down over the possibility of him leaving to join a premiership club which happily never happened. He looks refreshed and back to the Ian of old going into the new season and is looking to build something special long term so hopefully he will be here to stay for a long time yet.
Steve Thompson the forgotten man
Poor old Tommo often forgotten by many but so crucial to the team success or as one player said Ian does the thinking and emotion while Tommo does the running and joking.
To give people an idea of his work ethic you can normally find him still at the training ground 3-4 hours after everybody else has left, working with any squad player wanting to carry on training.
He has become a crucial cog in the machine that is Blackpool FC and now with the addition of Millen to oversee the development squad he will no doubt be focused even more on those finer things.
Completing the senior training staff is of course the beast that is George Wood.
A pool legend already, he has brought his never give up attitude to his training programme and the results are clear for all to see in Gilks improved performances last season.
He is adamant that Halstead is ready to be a number 2 and why the club has not looked for a keeper this summer and after all would you argue with George?
Part Two Squad transfers and wages to follow tomorrow and who might shine
