Championship action makes a long awaited return to Bloomfield Road tonight, for the first time in over three weeks.
Tony Mowbray will be hoping to mastermind his side’s first away points of the season after defeats on the road at Barnsley and Millwall.
Meanwhile, Blackpool will be hoping for their first win since the 6-0 thumping of Ipswich Town towards the end of August.
Back-to-back away games at Leicester City and Barnsley, either side of the international break, resulted in one point for Ian Holloway’s side, after gaining three wins in the opening three games.
A repeat of the corresponding fixture last season will mean a very satisfying evening for the Seasiders, as they ran out 3-0 winners against Mowbray’s side back in January.
Head-To-Head
Blackpool and Middlesbrough have faced each other on 60 occasions in competitive matches with the Seasiders winning 19, losing 26 and drawing 15 times.
Last Season’s Meetings
2 January 2012 – Blackpool 3-0 Middlesbrough
19 November 2012 – Middlesbrough 2-2 Blackpool
Middlesbrough
Boro followed up their opening day 1-0 loss at Barnsley with home wins against Burnley and Crystal Palace, before going down 3-1 at Millwall in their last game prior to the international break.
Luke Williams is Middlesbrough’s top scorer in the league this season, bagging two of their eight goals, with six others all on one goal.
Mowbray’s side lie in seventh place, which is where they finished at the end of last season, going into tonight’s match.
They are still in the Capital One Cup after winning away at Bury and Gillingham in the opening two rounds.
Stat Attack
The Seasiders currently have the joint best defence in the league along with Brighton and Hull, after conceding three goals in their opening five games.
Middlesbrough’s only away league goal this season was a penalty from Marvin Emnes in the 3-1 defeat at Millwall.
Blackpool’s and Middlesbrough’s biggest wins against each other came in the same season (1938-39). The Seasiders lost 9-2 away before exacting revenge on their opponents by winning 4-0 at home.
Last season’s 2-2 draw at the Riverside Stadium was the first time both teams scored in the fixture since they met in the old third division in 1986. Blackpool won 3-1 on that occasion.
Referee
Robert Madley (West Yorkshire)
The last time Madley presided over a game involving Blackpool was last season in the 1-1 draw at home to Portsmouth.
Stephen Crainey got the equaliser for the Seasiders from a free-kick after Erik Huseklepp opened the scoring for Pompey.
