Report from Wigan view point
BLACKPOOL XI 3
Robertson 12
Sylvestre 42
Grandin 45
WIGAN ATHLETIC U21 0
A strong Blackpool outfit featuring key first teamers took advantage of the adverse weather conditions with three first half goals, to which Latics had no reply despite getting stronger as the game went on.
There was certainly no sun on the coast today as the behind closed doors friendly between Latics’ Under 21s and a Blackpool XI was shifted from Bloomfield Road to the Tangerines’ Squires Gate training ground.
It was to put it lightly, unsettled weather conditions, so unsettled in fact, it was raining sideways at points in the first half.
Concentration was difficult to come by for both sides as they fought against the elements, the wind howling across the open training pitch.
Blackpool hit Latics with an early goal when a defensive mix-up was pounced on by Scott Robertson.
The former Dundee United player received the ball on the edge of the area after Latics’ keeper attempted to tackle an oncoming attacker, the ball popped up though and Robertson was there to finish.
Just after the half hour mark Latics had a great chance to be level when Jesjua Angoy was threaded a through ball by Danny Redmond but, he was closed in on by the goalkeeper and defender.
Blackpool hit Latics hard though in a three minute spell towards the end of the half with Ludovic Sylvestre doubling the lead with a left-footed volley just inside the penalty area.
It was made three on the stroke of half time as Sylvestre threaded Elliot Grandin in down the right hand side of the penalty area and the Frenchman powered home a low strike.
With spirits and bodies dampened at half time, Latics made three changes, with a further three throughout the second half.
It was a solid performance from then on in with the best chance of the game falling to Guillermo Andres.
The Spanish forward did a lot of hard work as he dispossessed the defender, rounded the goalkeeper but at a tight angle away from the goal placed his shot just wide of the ‘keeper’s left post.
It was a washout for anyone watching as they got battered and bruised by the wind and rain but, a good enough run-out for the team to keep them active during the international break.
A major positive note was the inclusion of Under 18 players Ryan Meadows, Joel Kerwin and Michael Wilson.
Wilson started the game at centre back with Josh Langley and Meadows and Kerwin were second half substitutes, the latter providing some very strong running and tough tackling.
