ah, I think this was pretty obvious meself..... ;D
Italy was originally awarded the 1908 Olympics, however, in 1906 Mount Vesuvius had an explosive eruption over a period of months. Over 100 people died, and Naples was badly damaged along with all the other local areas. Italy could not afford to host the games and London stepped in at short notice. We were also awarded the 1944 games by the Olympic committee, this quite obviously didn't take place due to another large event!!!, but they decided to award the 1948 ones to London anyway.
So, next question, retaining the Olympic topic....
What record does an English athlete have from the 1908 games that has still never been beaten by any athlete from any country in the Olympics.

no, i think that was an italian in the marathon, who had drunk brandy to keep himself going. The favourite had been quaffing champagne on the run and couldn't finish......
Answer in the morning if no-one gets it, i am retiring after a few late nights this week.....hoping to get to Peterborough tommorow too.

reet, quick answer before I head east over the A47.
The record held is that the americans refused a re-run in the 400M final, so when it restarted only the British athlete started. He was awarded the Gold, Silver and Bronze for winning the race, a feat that has never happened again.
