nahh, that was the city that was destroyed with Herculaneum by Mount Vesuvious(?) eruption, the large city near there is Naples. The only hill I know the name of in Rome is the Capitoline Hill, but I don't think this was one of the original hills as I recall.

Pompeii was the town, along with, as 4Stands correctly points out, Herculaneum, that was covered over by the eruption in 79AD by the volcano Mount Vesuvius, or 'Monte Vesuvio' in Italian. We went into the 'scavi' (ruins) via the 'Porta Marina' entrance('Marine Gate' or 'Sea Gateway' in English) and came out at 'Piazza Anfiteatro–Porta di Nocera' - where we caught the EAVBUS to Vesuvio, approx. 12 miles away.
The rail station for the best starting point is 'Pompeii Scavi Villa dei Misteri' (for Porta Marina) from either Napoli or Sorrento. (?40 mins. from either).
Please note that the (new) town of 'Pompei' has only one 'i'.
(we did these two in one day last July)
And your next geography and history lesson is -
The original 7 hills of Rome...
The Palatine Hill Aventine Hill the Caelian, the Capitoline, Esquiline Hill Viminal Hill, and Quirinal Hill.
and so, to Q # 203
Who was the Italian who had his offices in the Palazzo Venezia in Rome, and orated from a balcony in that building?

Well I wasn't certain, but the pope doesn't have to be italian and the roman emperors were long gone before it was built so it had to be a famous italian we know. next question name at least two of Blackpool FC's grounds that they have used other than Bloomfield Road

Ah, huh!
You're playing upon words, there, Whit.
I'll stand corrected but no "Team GB" has played in the Olympics - but they have (just before I was born) as "UK" or "Great Britain" - no?
and before WW1 if I'm not mistaken.....

I did not mention the term "Team GB", I said a GB (abreviation for Great Britain) mens footabll team and we entered them on a regular basis up to and including 1972, however we last qualified for the finals in 1960. However the question was when we last entered a team for the Olympics which was in 1972. On the other point by Chef, yes I should not have submitted a football question, and therefore withdraw the said question.

Q#205
The Kiel canal is a link between two seas, name them.
|
|
|
Post by roadchefourstands on Feb 26, 2012 11:59:06 GMT 1
Canal question, I wonder who will answer that one.... ;D
Baltic Sea and North Sea, it is the most heavily used canal in the world and is now in Germany. If you look on youtube, there are some fascinating timelapse trips through the canal (watch the ferries scuttle in front of the big ships from bank to bank) - sorry, can't link any as on me mobile and don't know whether you can do it.
