It is fiction, it dosn't get much colder than at the Poles where it does snow, but to be fair in very cold dense air there is less moisture, thus less precipitation.

Thanks, Whit, and now for an old chestnut as Q # 78
What city is also known as 'The Queen of the Danube'?
I propose that this Q will run until breckie - or sooner if someone gets it right - and that usually means when I surface from my scratcher.... ;D

Question # 78 held over........
On to our next question - # 79
There are three states on the Baltic Sea, now independent, once under Russian rule. What are they, and their capitals?

|
|
Post by whitstabletangerin on Jan 7, 2012 11:50:45 GMT 1
Latvia----- -Riga
Lithuania ----Vilnius
Estonia ----- Tallin
As it happens the one of the first books bought for me was the Rise and fall of the Baltic States, how they went from independant countries then conquest by the Russians.

That was an easy one in a way, wasn't it, considering our connection - Uncle Val?
(Too many stag and hens there now for my liking).
There is a fourth - Finland (Helsinki) which broke away from Russia just after WW1, but it's those three you state that are classed at 'The Baltic States'.
Your question, Whit, # 80.
I trust you have got the Normandy one re codenames?

|
|
Post by whitstabletangerin on Jan 7, 2012 12:40:22 GMT 1
Yes, thanks re Normandy, learn something everyday, had never heared of Neptune, it was just the plural in beaches that limited the operation as there must have been a lot, such as Market Garden (the disaster at Arnhem), the one by the commandoes in Norway, the Penumunde rocket site raid as well as North Africa and Scicily and Selerno.
Q#80.
In the Northern Hemisphere, which is the brightest star. ------------- Many stars in fact have one or two others in close proximity but to all intense and purposes are grouped together and named as one The brightest star is no exception, it is in fact two stars but close together. It is easy to find in the Winter night sky and as a clue I can tell you that at midnight evey year on the 31st december it is due south of us. The ancient Egyptians celebrated the new year on the star passing the meridian at midnight.

It all depends on what you term 'brightest' star, I'm told. I know that the Plough and the Big Dipper are groups, as is the Southern Cross, and where I am, the (North) Pole star seems to be the brightest. But that's too easy a Q/A as I'm sure it's some other name. Orion, dog, and series (?) are about the only others I can mind off the top of my head. The only stars I really know (and see) are those whizzing round my head after her ladyship has bashed me on the head with her rolling pin for coming home too late and too drunk!

Brightest, as how you see it by the naked eye. I will have to give you this as you have touched on it in you answer. It is Sirius, aslo known as the dog star and although not in Orion it can be easily seen if you know where Orion is in the night sky. Looing at Orion's belt, the three stars in line at a 45deg angle following the three stars downwards will bring you to Sirius. Tonight or in the next few weeks on a clear night you will see it in the south east about 20deg from the horizon moving around to the south and then south west just after midnight. It is twice the size of our sun but is a long way away but in terms of star distances it is one our closest at 8 and half light years away compared to the stars in Orion which vary between 600 and 2000 light years away. 8 and half light years away, well if you could travel at 186,000 miles a sec you would be there in 8 and half years. You would not do it in an old Ford car, cause an old Ford car, won't get that far. Happy days.

Q # 81.
If you were to cruise from Rotterdam to Bucharest, what rivers would you be on, and at which capital cities could you 'drop anchor'?
Off to get ready for the game........

|
Post by whitstabletangerin on Jan 7, 2012 18:56:33 GMT 1
The Rhine followed by the The Danube,
No Capital city in Holland, but before unification Bonn (the old west german capital), would have been the first but not now of course, then in the south of Germany joing the Danube, into Austria, so Vienna then Budapest and then Belgrade, can't think of any others.

Rivers - Rhine, (Main), and Danube. Capitals – Vienna, Bratislavia, Budapest & Beograd. Rotterdam>Salina (Black Sea) www.euromost.info/cruises/Danube_River_Cruises_Cruise_tours_central_europe.php( 'The Danube River' third paragraph). You'd have to disembark at Giurgiu for Bucharest, actually. The 'Titan' Cruising Brochure, pp. 55>71, even. ( just looking, bakmak, mind you - these trips cost in excess of £7k pp) I'll give you that, Whit. Yours for Q # 82 :-

Sorry, eh? Eh?
I'm afraid I can't hear a request on a board..........
I can see it, though ;D
OK, but not football, as the Rules in the initial post states, though that was intended to include all sports.
Hey! We've had a couple of sport questions......
Sport questions you've asked for, and sport question you will get.......
Here's a nice easy one until I can think of a 'sporty question' for you....
Q # 83
What is the (English) translation of the place-name in Turkey – “Pamukkale”?
Looking at the time, ( five past midnight) and the lack of participants on the board - this question can run until breckie.....

Of course - unless you come up north for a visit and a game or two at Bloomfield Road....
Q # 83 held over -
on to Q # 84
a sports question.....
There's a famous race called (trans.into English) the “Man Versus Horse Marathon” A cross-country course is laid out and human competitors pit their stamina against a posse of chosen horses. The course is 22 miles long with many natural obstacles to overcome. The steep slopes are a great test of endurance of both man and beast, and the tricky forestry, which a man may dart through, but which a horse can only travel round. Where (town and country) and when is this 'Race' held?

Looks like I have to hold this one (#85) over as well. So much for 'sports' questions. Q # 86 The XXth Commonwealth Games are being held – where, and when? Midnight, if not before?

Q85, overlapping and interlocking, nothing to do with fencing is it, I looked at some at B @ Q today and of course fencing is a sport too.
