Hi Fourstands, really interested to hear your story. I nearly bought into a canal boat building company in the 80's as I've always enjoyed the history and lifestyle of the canals. Unfortunatelly the business needed too much investment so it never got off the ground. At the time though they were filming a pilot of Rosie and Jim in the yard!...honest. Never had the bottle to live aboard full time though so credit there!
I've all the drawings to build my own when/if I eventually retire.
A 70' boat is massive! Am i right in thinking this limits the canals you can use like the Leeds-Liverpool?

Hi guys, as some of you know I have a special interest in aircraft and for a couple of years now have been using a simulator on air traffic control both in the UK and the USA. A few weeks ago I started on the following simulator www.ge-flightsimulator.com/ I wanted a change and decided I would like to fly a plane. For those interested, on the one I have listed above, firstly read the instructions and jot down on a piece of paper the the most important keys which are positioned in an unfamilar part of the keyboard on the right hand side. Just choose an aircraft then click on airport destination, you can put your own airport in the box, such as Blackpool Airport lancs and choose a small aircraft, you will not land an 380 on the runway, use the DC3 . The destinations 30,000 worldwide are very life like, at Blackpool you can see on landing the Bloomfield road ground dead ahead allbeit with three stands but dont try and land on it. I landed my first plane today after a long run in into Liverpool airport and took the DC3 for a spin around Blackpool for half and hour before crashing into the training ground. You can even nominate a call sign for the aircraft and talk to other pilots if you so wish. Tip, if you reduce the height and speed with any aircraft it will stall, watch your speed, height and horizon dials but also look out of the cockpit at the ground below, it is very realistic, above all be patient, it has taken me best part of a month to land the 380, and don't forget to put the landing gear down. One other tip, if you get into trouble just click on reset and start again, it can become very frustrating at times and you want to give up, but perserver and you may become a very good pilot. Glad in real life I was in the rear compartment of the Valiant, much too much like hard work up front. Good luck.

I found that it was best to do just 30mins at a time, otherwise it just get's to frustrating. Once you have the hang of flying level turning and getting up to speed, flying level then preparing to land, I havn't tried take offs yet. I am sure you will enjoy it Sherlock, but it came become nearly as important as the football club and just as frustrating, happy landings.
Edit.
You will find the most dificult aspect of landing is the speed and the stall factor, it just takes time and practice, don't forget the flaps.

Yes Yeni, just flown in the dc3 up to Fleetwood via Stanley park and back past the tower and noticed the 4th temp stand so the google map has been updated recently. Made a sweep around the Tower and returned to base. Have you had a go Y. ?
if you click on the photo of the dc3 at the top of page then at the bottom put in the airport you want to be near ie Blackpool and the dc3 will appear over the airport heading to the ground. The keys to press are outlined in the instructions on the opening page, you can also press map and or camera and when you get down to 1000 ft all the buildings landmarks etc look very lifelike.

It is at this point Sherlock that I should point out that having tried to land anA380 at Manston which has a 21/2mile runway I have written off most of Ramsgate and at least 20 aircraft.

Gawd! Just give me a simple Spit, any day - this lot is all too complicated for me! I didn't know what you were all talking about at first - a simulator, you say, as in aircraft training in a hanger, or such like? and 'wings' - well' I've still got my (cloth) glider pilot's wings if that's any help? unless... ...looks like I've seriously missed something here.......

Yeni, you can make it just like a simulator (as in acrew training) by clicking on the camera box then click cockpit view, then the jouney is viewed as a pilot would see it as opposed to a distant view such as the DC3 photo that Sherlock took from his flight from Blackpool airport and over the ground. On the location tab at the bottom of the screen after choosing an aircraft, you can choose an airport or in flight anywhere in the world, just type in the blank box at the bottom or you can choose one of those listed above the box.

When the page comes up you will see a line of boxes with planes up at the top. Click on the DC3 as an example and then a page appears with dials along the bottom and below them a series of boxes. Click the location box and then enter in the blank box at the bottom, Blackpool airport or wherever you want to go. then click the box just to the right which says camera and then a list will come up and click cockpit. The first page that comes up at the beginning has instructions on it and you can in fact join a popular airport and give yourselve a call sign and compete with others and chat. If you when you start press on the box marked "MAP" and you happen to be at Blackpool airport a small map appears and shows a little aircraft in the position in which you are flying.

What page comes up? from where? Whit, it's too fookin' late to start baffling me with the mechanics of a simulator just give me a Kirby or Sed. - they're more than enough for my simple mind at this time of night ;D
